Every project is different and each requires its own tailored approach. Four projects which David has particularly enjoyed working on are highlighted below.

David was commissioned by Scottish Business in the Community to test an approach to help businesses assess their own corporate social responsibility potential. A range of companies, many highly innovative in their application of corporate social responsibility to further their business objectives, were contacted and interviewed using the Corporate Healthcheck tool. As a result the Healthcheck Tool was refined and a number of recommendations regarding the need to work in partnership were made.

Working with literacy and numeracy organisations in West Lothian to help develop a local Literacy and Numeracy Action Plan. David's approach involved a telephone survey of learners, interviews with key local and national agencies and a workshop with local stakeholders to develop the principles underpinning the Action Plan. A strong partnership approach, drawing in local and national strengths, emerged.

Scottish Enterprise Glasgow has been working with city centre homelessness organisations to explore the role of IT in the lives of clients. David was commissioned to help develop a Digital Inclusion Strategy. Following consultations with stakeholders, focus groups with homeless clients and several workshops a strategy was developed which is due to be launched in September 2003. The strategy aims to enhance the activities of local organisations and has helped to attract support from BT's Citizens Online initiative.

SLIMS is a labour market intelligence unit which provides a service to a wide range of stakeholder and partner organisations in the west coast of Scotland. David was commissioned, on behalf of five Local Enterprise Companies, to test the value for money offered by SLIMS. In an extremely tight timescale a range of approaches were successfully adopted including:

  • a comparison with similar UK services
  • a ‘mock' tender exercise by a private sector alternative
  • evaluating the satisfaction of existing customers.
